The Best Moment in My Football Career
26th of May 2005 will be the day that I will not forget for the rest of my life. Not that I played in the Liverpool team but I really didnt expect them to lift the Champions League Cup. I have been supporting them 1991, have seen the ups and downs, the ins and outs. Before they lifted the Champions League Cup, the last big thing that they won was in 2000 when Gerard Houlier was in charge. It was the other 'treble' that they lifted. The League, FA and UEFA Cups. And before that the didnt win anything ever since I supported them. Rafael Benitez did an extremely good job out there in the finals! Kudos to him!
I made arrangements with my Liverpool pals, Jon and Steven to meet up with them at the new Liverpool fanclub at UE Square at Unity Street. When I parked the car, I saw 1 woman vomitting away (I guess she had too much to drink!) and when I left the carpark, there was a big commotion near Frasers Service Apartment. I think a fight had occured as the place were swarmed with police! I scuttled on to find my way to UE Sqaure. When I got there, it was full house! I then called Jon saying that Im outside the fanclub but as it was fullhouse, I decided to leave.
Went back to the carpark and as I was going out towards the CTE, I saw a car with its hazard lights on, and guess what??? Another woman was vomitting with her male companion by her side!!!! Times have changed, its not the guys vomitting, but the ladies instead! Reached home, turned on the TV and found out that Liverpool were down by 3 goals! Ouch! I didn't want to watch already but I told myself how often do I see Liverpool playing in a Champions League final? So I decided to watch and boy was I rewarded! Riise crossed to Gerrard, who headed the ball to the top left hand corner of the goalpost..GOAL!!! Dida did not even move! 2 mins later, Pool were on the onslaught again, this time with Hamann laying the ball on for Smicer, who took a potshot to Dida's bottom right and it went in!!! GOAL!!! The 3rd goal came when someone passed the ball to Gerrard in the penalty box but before Gerrard could even shoot, he was fouled by Gattuso! Penalty! I could not believe it! It looks like I was in dreamland! Could Liverpool pull off this penalty? Xabi Alonso was the penalty taker. Referee blew the whistle, Xabi ran and kicked the ball to the bottom right of Dida, Dida saved it but Xabi smashed in the rebound! They pulled it off!!! The scoreboard stated AC Milan 3 - 3 Liverpool! The rest as they say is history. Dudek did the honours by saving 2 penalty kicks in the penalty shootout.
